Cudeca is a non-profit Foundation that offers specialized care to people with cancer and other advanced-stage diseases, and supports their families completely free of charge.
Fundación Cudeca was born from the personal commitment of Joan Hunt, an English resident of the Costa del Sol, after living the experience of losing her husband to cancer. When she was admitted to a hospital in Malaga, Hunt found herself in a difficult clinical environment and lost in a language she did not understand.
Everything changed when her husband was transferred to the recently opened Palliative Care Unit of the Red Cross Hospital. There she found a team of doctors and nurses - where Marisa Martín was - "who made the farewell, in those last weeks with her husband, totally different from what she had been experiencing."
Hunt wanted all sick people to have the same right to receive the same care that their partner received. Thus, hand in hand, the two women began to devise how they could move the idea forward. In 1991 palliative care was beginning to develop very slowly in Spain and resources were very scarce. Thus, Cudeca was born due to the need and scarcity of this resource at that time.
From 1992 - when the association was nothing more than "Joan Hunt's predetermination" - until 2000, Cudeca already had an adequate center to care for patients, they had two teams of doctors and nurses and had different care units. In 2005 they completed all the projects, "our dream came true," recalled Martín. Cudeca was and continues to be possible thanks to the work and effort of many people committed to the project. Currently, the association has 70 employees; it accounts for more than 1,500 partners; it has held 168 events and has opened 25 stores in different parts of the province.
